USMLE Guide for International Medical Graduates

What is the USMLE?

The USMLE is a three-step medical licensing exam required for practicing medicine in the United States.

ECFMG Certification

International students must obtain ECFMG certification before applying for USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 exams.

Medical School Eligibility

Your medical school must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with ECFMG eligibility noted.

Step 1 Exam Requirements

Step 1 tests foundational medical sciences. ECFMG registration and valid credentials are needed to apply.

Step 2 CK Exam Requirements

Step 2 CK assesses clinical knowledge. You must pass Step 1 and continue meeting ECFMG requirements.

Step 3 Exam & Residency

Step 3 is usually taken after entering U.S. residency. It's required for full medical licensure.

English Language & Documentation

Submit medical transcripts, diplomas, and proof of English proficiency when registering through ECFMG.

Exam Application Process

Register and apply online via ECFMG’s Interactive Web Applications (IWA) portal with all required documents.
