The USMLE aspirants can generally take the USMLE Step 1 exam after finishing their 2nd year graduation in basic sciences. Further, they can start their preparation for USMLE Step 2 during their clinical courses and appear for the exam following the clinical years.
We would prefer the USMLE aspirants to take about 2-3 weeks as preparation time after the course completion. Remember that the new format has demand on more precise history taking, physical exam, besides well-written patient notes. That’s why you need rigorous practice before taking the exam.
Many USMLE aspirants prefer to seek guidance from the senior medical students with a mindset to ace the exam with good marks, but the chances are very less to perform well in the exam. But if you prepare through USMLE Strike with standard coaching and preparation strategies, then there is a 100% chance of clearing this exam scoring good marks at ease.
As far as the CBT (computer-based examinations) are concerned for USMLE Step1, 2CK & 3, the aspirant can take the test up to 6 times with only 3 attempts which has to be taken within a period of 12 months. However, this should not be your concern as to how many times you can appear for the exam, rather focus on passing this exam with a good score.
Yes, You need to get the ECFMG certification not only to apply for residency or fellowship programs but it is required to take the USMLE Step 3, and obtain a license to practice medicine without any restriction,etc. Also, one can gain certification after clearing USMLE Step 1 & 2 (CK & CS).
For the application of US residency, you should clear the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK & CS first. By doing so, you will get the ECFMG certification which in turn will enable you to apply for the residency program. Moreover, you should have received your visa before applying for residency.
You need not prepare hard for the USMLE but instead prepare smartly. Unlike the other USMLE aspirants who spend hours on watching recorded lectures, attend live interactive lectures as you can keep the learning process engaging rather than being mundane.
Generally, the students appear for USMLE Step 1 after the 3rd year of their MBBS and Step 2 CK during the internship phase. Later on, you should get to the US to appear for the rest of the exams. Keeping this in mind, it will take you around one to two years after the completion of your MBBS to clear all the USMLE steps.
There’s no age limit to take the USMLE exam. You are eligible to apply for USMLE whenever you need to. There are other factors which put a restriction on the aspirant to take this exam. For instance, the score because once you have passed the USMLE Step 1, it gets locked for the 7 subsequent years thereby restricting the candidate to improve the score.
