Introduction

  • May have carcinoma in situ (CIS) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
    • carcinoma in situ
      • Bowen’s disease
        • leukoplakia on the shaft of the penis or scrotum
        • peak incidence > 50 years
        • associated with HPV 16
        • minority of cases progresses to SCC
      • Erythroplasia of Queyrat
        • erythroplakia on the glans/prepuce
        • only the location distinguishes Bowen’s from Queyrat’s
      • Bowenoid papulosis
        • multiple papular lesions
        • affects at a younger age than Bowden/Queyrat
        • associated with HPV 16
        • does not progress to SCC
    • Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
      • more common in Asia, Africa, and South America
      • most common sites are prepuce/glans
      • commonly associated with
        • HPV 16 and 18
        • smoking
        • lack of circumcision  
  • increases risk only if man is not hygienic

Prognosis, Prevention, and Complications

  • Metastasis
    • SCC may seed to inguinal and iliac nodes
