        • used to prevent, stop, or retard disease-associated damage

        • methotrexate 
          • typically the initial DMARD used
        • tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor such as 
          • etanercept
          • adalimumab
        • leflunomide
        • sulfasalazine
        • hydroxychloroquine 
    • nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and/or glucocorticoids
